Said Omondi: “Children are prone to water-borne diseases due to lack of water and non-availability of clean water. If a family does not have adequate water, it is the children who suffer, thus families need to take a leading role in ensuring children are protected and use water accordingly.”

In his remarks, mayor of Mzuzu City, William Mkandawire, said the project will help people in the city to access clean water as areas which do not have community water points will be privileged to have some.

Among other activities, the project will construct public toilets, water kiosks, rehabilitate old communal water points and extend potable water to areas where there is great need.

Speaking earlier, Northern Region Water Board(NRWB)chief executive officer Titus Mtegha said the project will be implemented at a time there is an impending water crisis due to increased demand for safe water in the city. nPlan Malawi has launched a K1.3 billion Water Demand Management Project to improve water access, sanitation and hygiene in Mzuzu City.
